Reader’s Question:

Hi. I just got my drivers license in Texas and I just want to know if I need to be insured personally or if its okay not to get insurance for myself since the car has an insurance. Im just going to use my mother’s car for driving test. Thank you.

Daphne

Thank you for asking Daphne.

I would suggest that you check with the Department of Public Safety or TX Drivers License office to verify what proof of insurance you will need for the vehicle you will be using for the driving test. If you are using your mother’s vehicle, then it is likely that her insurance provider would require you to be added to the insurance policy for you to be covered while using her car for the driving test.

The Texas Department of Insurance states that young drivers should follow with the financial responsibility states laws, and the same applies for older drivers. However, most teenage drivers have the option of satisfying their requirements by being added to their parents’ car insurance policy. It can be expensive to add a young driver in parent’s policy, but it’s much cheaper than having a separate car insurance policy.

The TX Department Of Insurance states that, to say that a parents’ policy covers children living at the same house or away at school, even when not added on the policy. it’s still important that young drivers be listed on the policy as soon as they get their permit to drive even though children are automatically covered in the parent’s policy.

Insurance providers are required to charge the correct rate. This is based on the classifications of the drivers in your family. If the insurance company finds out that one of the driver is not listed on the policy during claim because of an accident, the company will let you pay the extra premium that should have been paid.

Goodluck!
