Texas insurance auto
Reader’s Question:
My son lives in Colorado and I live in Texas. I want to buy a car for him. Do we have to insure the car in both locations? thank you.

Good question Brent.
No.
Normally you would not going to be able to get insurance in both states. A car is usually insured in the same state that it is registered in. Generally, this is the same state in which the car is used and is garaged. It may be difficult to insure a car that you own and will be garaged in a different state and will be used by another person. If your stepson is on the title of the car and could register it and insure it in Colorado, its probably going to be a lot easier.
If this is not an option for you, you may try getting his own insurance on the car, even though he does not have insurable interest on the car. Not all insurance providers will permit this but some companies has polices that permit an individual to insure a car without having insurable interest in it. In order to be the named insured, they will require you to have care, custody and control of the car
You may verify with the Colorado DMV to find out how you or your son can register the vehicle there or if there any options where you can have it done in the state of Texas.
Goodluck!
