Reader’s Question:

Im a victim of a hit and run but I was able to get the license plate of the car. I only have a coverage on my car, how will I know if the driver who hit me has insurance coverage or not? I live in Texas.

Thank you for asking Valerie

You will need to notify the police and reported the hit and run accident (if you have not reported yet) so they can investigate on what happened. The police may be able to track the owner of the vehicle, hopefully since you have license plate of the car.

According to the Texas Department of Insurance your uninsured motorist coverage will cover for the damage in a hit and-run accident only if the incident is reported to the police. Even without you having this type of coverage it is likely if you find the at-fault party that their insurance provider will require a police report on the accident.

If the driver is found and the car owner takes responsibility with the accident then you should be able to make a claim with their insurance company. If instead the police are only able to locate the car owner then you may need to check with the Texas Department of Public Safety to check if they will release the person’s insurance information that is on file with them.

Goodluck!
