Typically alcohol offenses are taken very seriously by car insurance carriers. Having a motorist who may drive a car while being impaired can be considered quite a risk for insurance carriers.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, individuals under twenty one years of age who are convicted of the alcohol violations, such as consumption of alcohol by a minor, will receive a thirty day license suspension for the 1st offense, sixty days for a 2nd offense, and 180 days for a 3rd offense

Young Driver Car Insurance Abilene Texas TX

Reader’s Question:

My daughter is eighteen years old. Her Abilene Texas driver’s license expired. She received 2 traffic tickets for this, which have since turned into warrants. She lives with me. Under normal circumstances I would have to carry her on my car insurance policy. Because she does not have a valid driver’s license, can I now legally drop her from my insurance?

Henry

Abilene, TX

You will need to check with your insurance provider in Abilene Texas to see if they will permit you to drop your teenage daughter from your auto insurance policy. Most insurance carriers will not let you drop a household member from your insurance policy. However, most insurance providers will permit you to list her on your insurance policy as an ‘excluded’ driver. By doing this, you are informing your insurance provider that you will not permit that person to drive the cars on your policy. Also, you agree to assume full responsibility if you do permit that person to drive one of the cars on your insurance policy. Some insurance providers will require you provide proof the household member has other insurance before they will permit you to exclude that individual.

Auto Insurance El Paso Texas TX

Reader’s Question:

I am quite puzzled why my credit standing would determine my auto insurance premium rates in El Paso, Texas. Is there enough correlation to my spending and auto insurance premium rates?

Hans

El Paso, TX

It was not like this when auto insurance started selling on the market. You can blame that on the credit scoring company Fair Isaac & Co. (better known as FICO) who just wanted to drum up more business and tied up with auto insurance companies in the early nineties.

Apparently, FICO approached car insurance companies about using credit scores to determine their customers’ premiums. Many car insurance companies took FICO up on its offer at that time and FICO was able to show a correlation between certain credit behaviors and increased insurance risk. Auto insurance scoring proponents yielded studies which showed that having bad credit makes someone more likely to engage in risky behavior which also indicates a greater probability of outright fraud.

I quite get that but what’s really fraudulent is the secretive nature of credit and insurance scoring. Do you know that 2/3 of consumers did not know that their credit was a factor in their car insurance rates? It is good that you know this for most auto insurance policy owners in El Paso, Texas would not. Only very few car insurance companies share this information with customers and none of them will ever detail their scoring methods, not even in Texas TX.

Cheap Car Insurance Texas

Reader’s Question:

I have a Mitsubishi Eclipse and happen to be 19. I was wondering if there are any driving classes i could take to get my insurance cheaper.

Mark

Houston, TX

There are a lot of discounts available to the average motorist. Make sure to ask if you qualify for any when purchasing your car insurance policy set up.

Carriers offer discounts to those who have not had any moving violations or accidents for a number of years. You may also obtain a discount if you take a defensive driving classes. If you are a full-time student with a grade point average “B” or higher you can get a discount as well which is often referred to as good student discounts.

Some other common discounts you might be eligible for are: Multi-vehicle, if you insure more than one car with the same carrier. Safety features, if you have a vehicle alarm, airbags, automatic seatbelts, anti-lock brakes in your vehicle.

Auto Insurance Dallas Texas

Reader’s Question:

My son borrowed my car and drove in Dallas, TX. He went through a check point where law enforcement officer were checking insurance. He presented my insurance card and was told by the law enforcement officer that he could be given a ticket for driving without insurance because his name was not actually on the insurance card. This is really confusing. He borrowed my vehicle with permission and my car was insured. The police officer told him that they would give him a ticket for no insurance if they stopped him again. Can you please explain that to me? People borrow vehicle that are properly insured. They can be given a ticket for driving without insurance if their name is not on the card? Is this correct?

Amy

Dallas, TX

I would suggest that you should check the Texas Department of Public Safety to verify for certain if the police officer could give citation on your son for driving without insurance in this kind of situation because he showed your insurance card instead of one that had her name on it or not. If may be that the police officer could if he was being a stickler for the letter of the law but likely if your son came to court and showed your proof of insurance for the car and then whatever auto insurance he has in his own name that the ticket could be dismissed.

You are correct that people permit others to borrow their cars all the time and usually they show the car owner’s insurance card, but again I would advise you to verify with the TX DPS to check if a car driver must also carry their insurance card on them when driving another person’s car.

TX SR22 Insurance

Reader question:

Is getting TX SR22 insurance for a teenager worth it, or even possible without breaking the bank?

Jeremy

Good question, Jeremy.

Whether or not getting TX SR22 insurance for a teenager is worth it is entirely up to you, but I can give you some thoughts to mull over. First of all, how responsible is your teenager? Will you be footing the bill all by yourself, or will they help out, or pay the bill entirely with work money? Does your teenager need to work to save money for school or other necessary things? Or even to help you out with finances? If so, does your teen need a car to get to work, or is it close enough that they can ride a bike, or that they can catch a ride?

Even when considering all of that, remember that if your teen is old enough to drive and needs TX SR22 insurance, then they will be of age before their SR22 requirement is over, regardless of how old they are now. This means that it might be a good idea, since they’re so young and have a black mark against them so early on, to be able to show that they are responsible on the road and try to build up a good driving record.

You can even save money instead of overpaying for TX SR22 insurance for teens:

  • make them work hard at school. A good student discount can take a quarter of your insurance away.
  • Send them to more school by having them go through a defensive driving class.

Cheers,

Fashun Guadarrama.

Q: Does having bad credit make my Abilene SR22 car insurance rates go up, and how do I fix it if it does?

A: A bad credit history puts you in a demographic of drivers who file claims more frequently than the rest of people who have a good credit history, and since that adds more risk onto your already very risky Abilene SR22 policy, then you’re likely to have some rates which are through the roof at first and you’ll also probably have trouble getting insured at all.

If you want to have cheaper Abilene SR22 rates, then you need to work on improving your credit history. You will have to do three things to do this: first, in order to get rid of your bad credit, you will have to get any inaccurate items removed from your credit report, and then you will have to pay off what remains; then, you will have to start building good credit, perhaps by applying for a credit card, spending a small amount, and then paying it all off every month.

When you begin paying off your debt to improve your Abilene SR22 rating, it’s important to start paying off the debts which have the highest amount of interest on them so they don’t keep getting bigger.

Amarillo SR-22

Q: My son’s insurance was already very expensive, but now we have to file Amarillo SR-22 insurance for him. He’s 17 and can’t really get his own policy and needs to drive to work. How do we get cheaper rates?

A: It’s tough to have to deal with skyrocketing prices for teens, especially when they have to file Amarillo SR-22, making it much worse. However, there is something you can do.

If your kid has bad grades in school, this should act as a good motivator. In order to make your Amarillo SR-22 insurance rates drop, make sure he keeps on top of his studies and gets at least a B average in school. If he does so, most companies will take ten percent off of his policy.
