Reader’s Question:

I do not have an international license by I do have a valid license from my country. Can I still drive in the state of Texas?

Aditya

Thank you for asking Aditya.

According to the Texas Driver’s Manual, nonresidents (at least 18 years of age) may be able to operate any car in the state of Texas if they are legally licensed to drive such a car in their home state or country, and if their home state or country grants a recognition to citizens of Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety states that, a person 18 to 75 years of age with a valid out-of-country driver license with them may be able to drive a private, non-commercial car in the State of Texas for up to a year from date of entry into the United States.

The Texas Department of Public Safety states you may verify with the License Issuance at (512) 424-5089 to verify the reciprocity agreement status also.To get more information specifically about your situation you may contact the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)

You may also contact the Texas Department of Public Safety to check exactly what you should bring with you to operate a vehicle in the state of Texas so you will not have any problems driving.

Reader’s Question:

Is there a way to get a license in TX if I have a revoked license in the state of Pennsylvania?

Lanie

Good question Lanie.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), an individual who has a suspended or revoked driver’s license in another state will not be eligible to apply for a Texas license. If you were able to get a Texas driver’s license , the Texas license will be cancelled if your suspended driving status appeared in another state. This is under the Texas Transportation Code.

So from this information it looks like you will be able to get a Texas driver’s license while you have a suspended or revoked license in Pennsylvania. You need to take care of the issues first and have your Pennsylvania reinstated first before applying for a Texas driver’s license.

The Texas Department of Public Safety would check and verify with the National Driver Register (NDR) as part of the licensing process so that means there is no way to apply for a license in Texas without telling them about your driving status in Pennsylvania.

Reader’s Question:

We live in Texas and my husband got a speeding ticket in the state of Oklahoma. How will this affect our rates and I also want to know if it will be on his driving records. Is there a way to prevent this?

Martha

Good Question Martha.

If you are residing in Texas, you will have to follow the rules and regulations defined by the state of Texas. The regulation/laws in insurance in the state of Oklahoma will definitely not affect your rates in Texas.

Texas and Oklahoma are both members of the Drivers License Compact. This means that both state are in agreement their courts and departments of vehicles will share information regarding traffic offenses and violations. Each will inform the state in which a person is licensed of the traffic violation committed .

The Texas Department of Public Safety states that any out of state violations will be placed on your Texas driving record. It is 2 points for a moving violation conviction in the state of Texas or if its in another state.

the laws in Texas requires all insurance rates offered to be reasonable and adequate. car insurance providers in Texas set their own rates and then file them be reviewed by the TDI.

According to the Texas Department of Insurance insurance providers may add surcharges to your premium, some may be as high as 60%, for the following:

1. accidents

2. any traffic violations

3. involuntary manslaughter
4. DUI
5. criminally negligent driving
6. driving without or suspended drivers license.

It does not say that speeding below 10 mph over the limit is excluded from a surcharge or premium rate increase. It would looks like that it would be up to your insurance provider and their rating system if the speeding ticket will affect your insurance rates once they see on your driving record.

Reader’s Question:

I lived in California and I received a speeding ticket in Dallas. How will his affect my driving record and insurance rate in CA?

Jason

Thank you for asking Jason.

California and Texas are members of the Drivers License Compact. This means Texas will notify California of this speeding ticket that you received once you are convicted of it. California’s Department of Motor Vehicles will record this to your CA driving record. They will assign points to it. For out of state speeding tickets ,usually it is assessed as 1 point.

You may want to check if traffic school may be available as an option to you as a way to keep the ticket off your driving record. The court on your ticket will be able to give you more information if you are eligible for this option.

If the speeding ticket is placed on your driving record then an insurance provider would see it when they pull up your MVR. If you just moved and changed your driver’s licenses, insurance provider will pull your current driving history and record so that means they will going to rate your policy premiums using all of this information.

It depends on your insurance company’s rating system if the Texas speeding ticket will affect your insurance rates.

Reader’s Question:

What penalties will I be facing If get caught with an expired insurance? I live in Dallas Texas.

Ria

Good question Ria.

If you were given a ticket for showing an expired car insurance card to a police officer but still did have an auto insurance on your car at that time you may be able to clear up the issue by going to court and provide them your proof of insurance and the date of the citation.

If a driver is given a citation for failure to carry financial responsibility and he or she was in fact covered by a car insurance policy at the time that the citation was given, the motorist may provide proof of financial responsibility to dismissed the citation. The proof of financial responsibility must indicate the following:

1. insurer’s name, phone number and address;
2. number of insurance policy;
3. The policy period

4. The name and address of each insured;
5. statement of that coverage that complies with the minimum amounts of liability insurance required by the state
6. covered vehicles make and model.

If the proof does not show all requirements, the court will not accept the proof of insurance. You will need to get a new card from the insurance company showing all the necessary requirements, or you may get a letter from the insurance provider, stating the requirements that are not included on the insurance card.

A Texas court in a various jurisdiction may also have different requirements. You may contact the court on your ticket, to verify what you need to bring to court to prove that your car insurance was not expired.

You will face penalties for driving without insurance, if get caught with an expired insurance. Texas law has severe penalties for violation on the financial responsibility law of the state. A fine between $175 and $350 is for the first conviction. Subsequent convictions may result in fines of $350 to $1,000, driver’s license suspension, and impoundment of your vehicle.

Reader’s Question:

I live in Dallas, Texas. I want to know what my points are for my convictions 3 years ago. thank you.

Rhea

Thank you for asking Rhea.

I suggest that you contact the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for a copy of your driving record. This would include in your driving record the list of traffic violations that you have been convicted of and the accumulated points on your record for each violation.

The phone number that you may call for the Driver Records Bureau is at 512-424-2600. You may ask any questions about how you can get a copy of your driver record. Normally they will not give you your points total over the phone. This is because there is a fee associated with getting your driving record.

According to the Department of Public Safety though, to get information regarding your convictions , you may be able to get a copy of your driving record by purchasing and completing the form which is available in their website, and mailing it to the Department with a fee, or checking their online service.

Q: My son’s insurance was already very expensive, but now we have to file Amarillo SR-22 insurance for him. He’s 17 and can’t really get his own policy and needs to drive to work. How do we get cheaper rates?

A: It’s tough to have to deal with skyrocketing prices for teens, especially when they have to file Amarillo SR-22, making it much worse. However, there is something you can do.

If your kid has bad grades in school, this should act as a good motivator. In order to make your Amarillo SR-22 insurance rates drop, make sure he keeps on top of his studies and gets at least a B average in school. If he does so, most companies will take ten percent off of his policy.

Austin SR-22

Q: What is an Austin SR-22 insurance policy?

A: There are a few things you can do that will get your license suspended and require you to file Austin SR-22 insurance once it is reinstated, such as driving drunk or getting into a car accident when you don’t have insurance. If you do any of these things, then you will either have to avoid driving for two years and leave your license suspended, or you will have to get an Austin SR-22 insurance policy.

Every month, the Austin SR-22 form is filed by your car insurance company with the Texas DPS. If you don’t pay, an SR-26 is filed and you will again lose your license.

Q: I need to get Brownsville SR-22 insurance in order to drive, but no one will insure me. What am I supposed to do?

A: First of all, where are you looking? Instead of sticking with your usual companies, look for companies that specialize in high risk customers with Brownsville SR-22 such as yourself and get quotes from them. It will cost more, but you’ll be insured.

For an even pricier but absolute option, if the above doesn’t work for you, you can buy Brownsville SR-22 insurance by joining the Texas insurance risk pool. This will assign you to accompany from which you can buy your policy.

Galveston SR-22

Filed under: SR22 Texas, Texas Non Owner insurance

Q: I’m supposed to get a Galveston SR-22 policy, but I don’t own a car. How do I do this?

A: If you don’t own a car and you don’t intend on driving anyone else’s, then you don’t need to get a Galveston SR-22 policy at all. The deal is that either you wait two years after your suspension to get your license back, or you pay for SR-22 filing during that time.

However, if you don’t own a car but you intend to be driving someone else’s, then you will need a Galveston SR-22 insurance policy for non-owners. This will only cover you for liability and will be more expensive than usual, but is good for those who still need to drive now and then.
